It’s the most wonderful time of year — rain is turning to snow, holiday lights are going up in windows, and, most importantly, critics are picking their year-end lists.
These days, anyone with an Internet connection can provide their take on the year in film, but critic David Ehrlich is a little different. Every year, Ehrlich releases a video celebrating his top-25 movies, but with a twist: clips of the movies are tied together through music. And not just any music; motifs are taken from one movie and applied to another. So the use of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in Anomalisa underscores clips from Mad Max: Fury Road and The Clouds of Sils Maria, while “Speak Low,” the night-club song from Phoenix, gets juxtaposed with the central relationship from Carol. All of it (naturally?), is bookended by a digitized Marlon Brando head reciting the “out, out, brief candle” speech from Macbeth.
